How to Use the Annual Leave Calculator
Follow these steps to calculate your annual leave entitlement in Cyprus:
- 1
Enter your employment start date
If you started this year, enter the exact date. The calculator automatically prorates your entitlement. If you started before this year, your full annual entitlement applies.
- 2
Set the calculation date
Defaults to today. You can change this to see how much leave you will have accrued at a future date, or to check a past date.
- 3
Select your working week
Choose whether you work 5 or 6 days per week. The legal minimum entitlement differs: 20 days for a 5-day week and 24 days for a 6-day week.
- 4
Enter your contractual leave days
If your contract grants more than the legal minimum, enter that number. Leave it blank to use the legal minimum for your working week.
- 5
Add part-time hours if applicable
If you work part-time, toggle Yes and enter your contracted hours and the full-time hours for the role. Your entitlement is scaled proportionally.
Cyprus Legal Minimum Annual Leave
The Annual Holidays with Pay Law (Cap. 8) sets the minimum annual leave entitlement in Cyprus. Entitlement accrues proportionally from the employment start date. Part-time workers receive a pro-rated entitlement based on their contracted hours.
| Working Days per Week | Minimum Annual Leave |
|---|---|
| 5-day week (MondayβFriday) | 20 working days |
| 6-day week (MondayβSaturday) | 24 working days |
The Calculation Formula
Full-year entitlement = contractual days (minimum 20 or 24 based on working week) If started mid-year: Proportional entitlement = (days from start date to Dec 31 Γ· 365) Γ annual entitlement Accrued to date = (days from Jan 1 or start date, whichever is later, to calculation date Γ· 365) Γ annual entitlement Remaining = Accrued β days already taken Part-time adjustment: multiply all figures by (contracted hours Γ· full-time hours) Value in hours = remaining days Γ 8
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the minimum annual leave entitlement in Cyprus?
- The legal minimum under the Annual Holidays with Pay Law is 20 working days per year for a 5-day work week, and 24 working days for a 6-day work week. Many employment contracts and collective agreements grant more than this minimum.
- How is annual leave calculated for someone who started mid-year?
- If you start employment during the calendar year, your entitlement for that year is proportional. The calculation counts the number of days from your start date to December 31st, divides by 365, and multiplies by your annual entitlement.
- Do part-time workers in Cyprus get annual leave?
- Yes. Part-time workers are entitled to annual leave on a pro-rata basis, calculated by multiplying the full-time entitlement by the ratio of their contracted hours to full-time hours. For example, working 20 of a 40-hour full-time week gives 50% of the full-time entitlement.
- Are public holidays counted as annual leave in Cyprus?
- No. Cyprus has 15 public holidays and these are entirely separate from your annual leave entitlement. If a public holiday falls on a day you would normally work, you get that day off without it reducing your annual leave balance.
- Can unused annual leave be carried over to the next year in Cyprus?
- Yes β by mutual agreement between employer and employee, unused annual leave can be accumulated for up to 2 years. The maximum accumulation is 40 days (5-day week) or 48 days (6-day week). Without an express agreement, leave should be taken in the year it is earned. Courts stress that leave cannot be accumulated indefinitely as its purpose is to protect employee health and safety.
- How is part-time annual leave entitlement calculated?
- Part-time entitlement = full-time entitlement Γ (part-time contracted hours Γ· full-time hours). For example, if full-time is 40 hours per week and you work 24 hours, your ratio is 0.6 and you receive 60% of the full-time annual leave entitlement.
